Settings in RyderShip
We have an item-level details setting for "Hazmat" which can be set to No, ORMD, Lithium, or Lighters, as defined in EasyPost's Shipment Options docs. If you are using our new Item Details pages, your settings are a little different. For more specifics on the lighter option, see below. You can also set Hazmat through Bulk Actions using Set Hazmat Type.
Legacy Item Details: Open the item, click the Details tab and the More link. Scroll down to Hazmat.
New Item Details: Open the item, click Item Details on the left side. Scroll down to the Shipping Details section, and click Contains hazmat. The Select Hazmat Type drop-down opens.
Here’s the priority of how to select which option to use:
1. Lithium: Choose when there’s ANY lithium present in the item
2. Lighters: Choose when item contains flammable gas. This is a higher risk than ORMD
3. ORM-D / Limited_Quantity: Choose as the lowest risk classification
Lighter option requirements
If you are selecting the lighter option, an order-specific Carrier Account rule must be setup to ensure EasyPost / USPS will ship the package without issue.
All Carrier Account rules are internal and must be set up by RyderShip.
Here’s an example of a Carrier Account rule:

Bulk updates and search
In any Inventory search, Bulk Actions > Set Hazmat Type allows you to change Inventory in bulk; Hazmat Type is a searchable term.
Carrier options
When shipping lighters, see the Lighter option requirement section above for specifics.
Generally speaking, Hazmat = ground only. When you're building out your rule set, it's best to proactively select ground shipping methods for Hazmat items.
Things go much better when whitelisting a short list of approved Shipping Methods for dangerous goods. Expedited shipping is usually not an option.
Make sure that you have your ORMD stickers ready and rules set for any of these goods. You will also need a Surface Stamp. You can purchase these from Uline if needed.
